Hot off the Press: Big Sky on the Cover

New Coffee Table Book: The Man Behind the Maps: Legendary Ski Artist James Niehues

Have you ever noticed that nearly every ski resort trail map has the same artistic signature tucked in the trees in the lower right corner? That’s because one man, James Niehues, has painted over 200 individual resort trail maps – by hand! And now these true works of art have been compiled together in a handsome new coffee table book The Man Behind the Maps: Legendary Ski Artist James Niehues, and Big Sky Resort has been chosen to be on the cover.

“Big Sky seemed a natural fit to grace the cover,” said Niehues. “Lone Peak is truly an iconic mountain, one that immediately demands your full attention upon turning into Gallatin Canyon Basin. The classic lines from its summit – the Big Couloir, Dictator Chutes and North Snowfields – are both aesthetically beautiful as well as well-deserving of their double black diamond status.  The mile-long runs and gladed lodgepole forests seem to go on forever, definitely one of my best.”

Niehues’ loyal fans recently came together to launch this project on Kickstarter, a realization of a lifelong dream for James and a true celebration of his ubiquitous career; in fact, Niehues was recently nominated to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.

The foreword was penned by pioneering big-mountain skier Chris Davenport as it walks the reader through the history of resort map making and Niehues’ unique approach, starting from aerial shots to skiing every inch of the mountain to hand-painting every trail, tree and chairlift.

To commemorate the resort landing the cover shot, now through the end of September, Big Sky skiers and snowboarders receive 10% off when ordering both the book and a Big Sky Resort art print on Niehues’s website (discount automatically applied at checkout).

Guaranteed to trigger memories of epic ski trips and spark lively dinner conversations, The Man Behind the Maps: Legendary Ski Artist James Niehues is the perfect complement to your slope-side cabin and an ideal gift for avid skiers and snowboarders.
